Tackling Illicit Flows and Use of Ammunition

This event will highlight the importance of accurately diagnosing the problem of illicit ammunition flows for effective policymaking and law enforcement. Presentations will focus on approaches for monitoring such use and flows, including new types of cooperation between research institutes, governments, and forensic departments for profiling and analysing recovered ammunition.

The Small Arms Survey 2020 online forum 'Taking stock of action on the illicit small trade' will consist of a series of virtual events to exchange knowledge on illicit small arms proliferation and share effective measures to tackle the illicit small arms trade in all its aspects. The forum will bring together UN agencies, international organizations, as well as governmental and non-governmental experts to reflect on the lessons learned from 20 years of implementing the PoA—and 20 years of existence of the Small Arms Survey—and the new challenges and opportunities for addressing the illicit small arms trade in the time of Covid-19.

Gendering Small Arms Control for Peace: North Africa and Sahel Perspectives

The role of women in controlling small arms and light weapons in North Africa and the Sahel–Sahara region is vital. By bringing together women who have worked on small arms control for a regional organization, a national institution, and a local initiative to share their experiences, the Small Arms Survey—supported by Canada and the Netherlands—aims to reflect on successes and challenges, all the while drawing lessons to inform future policies.

Transnational illicit arms traffickers take advantage of ungoverned spaces and insecure borders in the understudied Sahara-Sahel region, which has a significant impact on armed violence dynamics in states like Chad, Libya, and Niger.
