BMS6 side event: Trade, Transparency, and Illicit Trafficking

The Small Arms Survey’s side event on ‘Trade, Transparency, and Illicit Trafficking’ took place today. Hosted by the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations, the event took place during the Sixth Biennial Meeting of States to Consider Implementation of the Programme of Action on Small Arms, being held this week at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The side event saw the launch of the Trade Update 2016: Transfers and Transparency, which features the latest figures on the world’s main exporters and importers of small arms and light weapons. The Update highlights significant recent changes in the trade and presents the Small Arms Trade Transparency Barometer 2016, which scores key exporters from the most to the least transparent.

The Small Arms Survey also presented two studies on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and on how the new 2030 Agenda establishes links between arms control and development, peace, and security. The first study, Measuring Illicit Arms Flows: SDG Target 16.4, considers the challenges and opportunities involved in implementing Target 16.4 and the role of current frameworks, such as the Firearms Protocol, Programme of Action, and International Tracing Instrument. The second study, A New Development Agenda: Bridging the Development–Security Divide, examines the concept of illicit arms flows with a view to enhancing the operationalization of the 2030 Agenda.

In addition, the Small Arms Survey launched new editions of two publications from its Handbook series: Regional Organizations and the UN Programme of Action on Small Arms (2nd edn.) and A Guide to the UN Small Arms Process: 2016 Update.
