Small Arms Survey Podcast #2: Setting the scene for cooperation

In this episode, the Small Arms Survey’s Managing Director, Eric Berman, talks about the handbook Regional Organizations and the UN Programme of Action on Small Arms (PoA), a valuable guide to the regional actors and institutions involved in tackling the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons.

The PoA provides the framework for activities to counter the illicit trade in such arms. Having recognized the regional dimension of small arms trafficking, UN members have called on regional organizations to be part of the solution.

The episode explains how and why the Small Arms Survey devised the Handbook to identify those regional organizations whose work is pertinent to the PoA process, and discusses some of the impacts of this research.

The Handbook gives details of 52 regional organizations that undertake work relevant to the PoA, and examines 19 PoA activities that refer to regional organizations specifically or to regional-level action.

A Research Note provides a concise overview and background to the Handbook.
