Sudan update — Abyei fighting, the LRA, & Darfur peace process

Recent updates from the HSBA include information and analysis on the Lord’s Resistance Army, the crisis in Abyei, and the Darfur peace process.

The Unresolved Crisis in Abyei:  The situation in Abyei continues to pose a serious security threat along the contested North–South border. While preparations for South Sudan’s independence are already under way, there is little progress on the crisis in Abyei. Recently fighting has fighting has broken out between a Joint Integrated Police Unit and Misseriya in Todac. http://www.smallarmssurveysudan.org/facts-figures-abyei.php

Lord's Resistance Army (LRA): Led by Joseph Kony, fighters from the LRA continue to attack civilians in parts of the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Sudan. Field reports indicate that Kony and a group of fighters crossed into the DRC either late 2010 or January 2011, having failed to secure support from the Sudan Armed Forces in South Darfur. Their intentions are unclear, but the reappearance of Kony in the DRC seems to coincide with an increase in attacks against civilians. http://www.smallarmssurveysudan.org/facts-figures-armed-groups-southern-sudan-LRA.php

Darfur Peace Process: The Darfur peace process in Doha, Qatar, ran into new difficulties in February as the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and the Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM) rejected compromise proposals tabled by the mediation on the basis that they do not meet the insurgents' basic demands. http://www.smallarmssurveysudan.org/facts-figures-darfur-peace-process.php

The Sudan Human Security Baseline Assessment is a multi-year research project, administered by the Small Arms Survey, which supports violence-reduction initiatives through its research and dissemination of information.
