Strengthening Implementation and Enforcement of the Arms Embargo on North Korea

Recent reports by the UN Panel of Experts indicate that there is a lack of awareness and capacity to effectively implement all of the sanctions that the UNSC has imposed on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (hereafter DPRK) in order to reduce the threat that it poses to international peace and security.

The Small Arms Survey’s Strengthening Implementation and Enforcement of the Arms Embargo on North Korea (SAENK) project contributes to the efforts of the UN Sanctions Committee pursuant to UNSC Resolution 1718 and its independent Panel of Experts (hereafter PoE) to curb proliferation of arms and enhance international peace and security.

Towards this end, the project is working to strengthen national implementation and enforcement of the UN sanctions and arms embargo on the DPRK in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. A key component of this project will be a series of regional expert workshops that will be held in Africa, in the Middle East, and a later stage in Asia.
