Privately Manufactured Firearms Seizure Research in Europe

The project aims to support EU-funded Project VISTA’s research design and data collection phase and produce a study that will examine definitional issues surrounding privately manufactured firearms (PMFs), collect and analyse data on seized PMFs through primary research and the EU Gun Violence Incident Monitor, identify the latest trends in PMF proliferation, and assess the extent to which existing seizure databases systematically capture sufficiently detailed information on recovered PMFs.

The study will further identify opportunities to improve the utility of existing seizure databases for supporting law enforcement operations, identifying emerging firearm-related threats, and building a comprehensive intelligence picture on the proliferation of illicit firearms in Europe that can support evidence-based policy-making, with particular focus on PMFs.

Project VISTA addresses the issue of illicit firearms proliferation in EU Member States and neighbouring countries. More on that project here.
