More firearms, more security, or greater gender violence in Chile?

'Citizen security has become the primary concern of people in Chile. According to various opinion studies, fear of being a victim of a crime is at the highest recorded amount in the last 23 years. However, instead of facing this challenge through proven, evidence-based approaches focused on prevention, this fear has been used to promote politically motivated "tough" policies - bills such as those aimed at promoting greater flexibility in carrying firearms - thereby increasing their circulation. These types of measures are problematic because they could cause an increase in the levels of gender violence, creating more crime and representing a setback in human rights...'
